Professor Fairouz Kamareddine's Bio,
Maitrise (French B.Sc. in Pure Mathematics), M.Sc., Ph.D., C.Math., C.I.T.P., F.I.M.A., F.B.C.S.
Fairouz Kamareddine earned a MaƮtrise (French B.Sc.) in Pure
Mathematics, from the Lebanese University, Beirut in 1980. Since she
obtained her MaƮtrise with the highest distinction (she was the top
(number 1) in Pure Mathematics in all the branches of the university),
she was awarded a scholarship to study for a PhD in her choice of 3
countries: France, the UK or the USA. Although her mother wanted
France and her father wanted the USA, she chose the UK because she
wanted to learn English and she wanted to remain in closer distance to
the middle east (the USA was farther away). Since then, she has become a
regular visitor to the USA (and France) where she has established
working relationships that she values tremendously.
Professor Kamareddine spent her initial period in the UK (January-July 1981) learning
English in Bristol.
Having trained as a Pure Mathematician, she wanted to learn about
Computer Science and hence she enrolled in September 1981 at Essex
University where she obtained a Diploma (1982) and a Master of Science
in Computer Science (1983) (she passed both examinations with
distinction). The period 1982-1983 was very painful
since 1982 was the start of the Israeli invasion to Lebanon
which would change everything in Lebanon since. After a harsh reminder
of the realities of the destructions of war, Kamareddine returned to
the UK in August 1984 and moved to Edinburgh where she enrolled for a
PhD at the University of Edinburgh and completed a PhD thesis entitled
"Semantics in a Frege Structure" (official graduation 1989). In
September 1987 she officially started her permanent academic position
at Glasgow University (first as a lecturer 1987-1997 and then as a
reader from 1997). In 1998 she moved to a chair (ful Professorship) at
Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. In between 1987 and 2008, she has
also officially held visiting positions in universities across Europe
(e.g., Eindhoven University of Technology 9/1991-8/1992 and numerous
spring/summer periods between 1993 and 1998, University of Savoie at
Chambery, France, in March 1997 and June 2008) and numerous other
visiting positions elsewhere (e.g., Boston University, USA, Winter/Spring
1997).
Professor Kamareddine is leading a distinguished and successful
academic career at the interface of Mathematics, Logic and Computer
Science as witnessed by her multiple learned fellowships and charters,
her large number of worldwide consultancy assignments, especially on
education issues, her many individual and network grants from all
levels of institutions ranging from universities all the way up to the
United Nations, her large number of positions as journal editor and
memberships on programme committees and organisation and
meetings. Equally, she frequently appears as invited speaker at
worldwide international research as well as eductational events. Her
experience in research, staff, and teaching administration is
extensive and at least commensurate with her 11 years as full
professor. Most notably, she has and is playing leading roles in the
development, administration and implementation of interdisciplinary,
international, and academia-industry collaborations and networks.
Since 2001 she has acted as an expert evaluator, rapporteur and
vice-chair for the MAT-ENG panels of the EU research frameworks (5, 6
and 7) of the European Union.
Professor Kamareddine has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers (more
than 43 of which are in journals, and the rest in conferences), many
of which have appeared in top Logic and Computer Science journals.
Her publications also include several book chapters, two books and 6
edited books/special issues.
Kamareddine has extensive experience in teaching and is even a
sought-after expert on teaching issues as witnessed by her many
evaluation, examination and consultancy work related to teaching. To
name a few, she is since 2000, a member of the UK Quality Assessment
Agency, reviewing the teaching programmes of universities worldwide
even at the level for the UN and has been heavily involved in the
development and management of international and interdisciplinary
teaching programmes.
Kamareddine is fluent in Arabic, French, English and Dutch and has
intermediate knowledge of German and Spanish. She also has beginners
(mostly reading) knowledge of Portuguese, Italian and Hebrew.
Kamareddine is a green supporter, and as a matter of principle, has only owned a car for
one year throughout her entire life. She uses
her bicycle as her means of transport. She was active for a long time in dance and music
and she holds a number of social dancing awards. Her other hobby is swimming.
